i was just wondering.......why is the ancient democracy that athens developed really that important, i mean how did it change their history?

I don't like the question "How did it change their history". Their history WAS that of a democratic nation, there was no change; this makes it difficult to answer the question, especially given the context (since it's such an over-arching feature in Athenian society, it's tough to say what would have been different).
