Press releases claiming that a “test for string theory” has been found appear with some regularity, notwithstanding the fact that no one actually knows how to test string theory. The latest one comes from the University of California at San Diego. . .
I think the people responsible for this should be ashamed of themselves.
Update: Not to be outdone by UCSD, Carnegie-Mellon has also issued a [url="http://cmu.edu/news/archive/2007/January/jan23_stringtheory.shtml"]press release (http://www.math.columbia.edu/%7Ewoit/wordpress/) about this. More also here (http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/20070023201818data_trunc_sys.shtml) and here (http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/526753/).
Update: More at Digg (http://digg.com/general_sciences/Physicists_Develop_Test_for_String_Theory), SpaceDaily (http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Physicists_Develop_Test_for_String_Theory_999.html ), Science Frontline (http://www.sflorg.com/sciencenews/scn012307_02.html), etc., etc.
Update: Yet another major university issues a misleading press release about this: from the University of Texas Team of Theoretical Physicists Develop a Test for String Theory (http://www.utexas.edu/opa/news/2007/01/physics25.html).
