I was wondering if anybody knew possible numerical solution schemes to a set of coupled nonlinear PDEs. Would greatly appreciate references to books or conference papers on this subject.

NONLINEAR problems in themselves are a nuisance. Usually what you do is use a Runge-Kutta method with Newton's method for solving non-linear equations that have to be solved along the way.
As far as the "coupled" part is concerned, that's NOT a difficulty. Just set up two (or more, depending on how many equations you have) Runge-Kuttas that run simultaneously, each using the latest result of the other.
